Where to Get Started With Your Research

It's hard to imagine, in this digital age, not doing some kind of research before making a decision. After all, research is at our fingertips for almost everything. It's no different for investing decisions.

RBC Direct Investing has a wealth of online investing resources to help you with your decisions. Let's take a look at some of the research options you'll find on the RBC Direct Investing site.

Detailed Quotes

If you've narrowed down your search and know a specific name, symbol or keyword you want to search, a great place to start is with a detailed quote. The search box at the top right corner of any page will get you to a detailed quote page, where you'll find valuable price information, charts, ratios, news, commentary and more related to the security you're interested in. You'll find out more about detailed quotes in the next section of this guide, and you can check out the How to Read a Stock Quote video for navigation tips.

Investor's Toolkit

If you're looking for ideas and research tools, head to your Investor's Toolkit under Research on the site menu and explore its two navigation tabs – Learning & Tools. To help you invest with confidence, here's some of what you'll find:

Screeners: RBC Direct Investing offers screeners for stocks, mutual funds and exchange-traded funds (ETFs) to help you narrow your search for securities. They allow you to search based on criteria that are important to you. There are a few ways to use screeners. First, you can select and set your own criteria to create lists of ideas, which can then be saved as watchlists for easy monitoring. You can also choose from a number of predefined screeners. Find out more in How to Find Investments That Matter to You.

Analyst Pick Lists: Here you can find out what Morningstar‡ analysts are noticing in the investment market.

Analyst Ratings: Find the latest analyst upgrades and downgrades for stocks and exchange-traded funds (ETFs). Data is compiled by Refinitiv‡, a third-party vendor.

Research Reports: Find research reports from various external experts on equity, fixed-income, currency and commodity markets, economic conditions and more.

Now let's say you're interested in more general research — things like how the markets are doing and what (or who) is making news. The Research tab on the RBC Direct Investing site brings you all of that and more when you click on Markets Overview. Consider this your one-stop market-information hub. Check out what's going on with the stock exchange indices you follow, such as the S&P/TSX Composite Index, S&P 500, Nasdaq, Dow Jones and more. You can also stay in tune with breaking news, economics, top performing industries and upcoming events such as when companies are expected to report earnings and dividends.

Inspired Investor

The RBC Direct Investing online magazine, Inspired Investor, brings you personal stories, timely information and expert insights to empower your investment decisions. It's also home to the Investing Academy, where you'll find a series of investing guides on topics such as Investing in StocksOptions Trading and Naming Beneficiaries.

Additional Tools

There are a number of tools that can also help with your research and planning:

Portfolio Analyzer — found under Monitor > Portfolio Goals, this tool allows you to easily view your portfolio's mix of investments and monitor risk.

Watchlists — These can help you keep an eye on stocks, ETFs and/or mutual funds you've already invested in, or ones you want to learn more about. Find out more in 5 Good Reasons to Use a Watchlist.
