Edit Profile FAQs

How do I update my Profile online?

  1. Click on the Profile icon at the top right of your page and select "View Profile & Account Settings”
  2. Select the "Change your Client Profile" link
  3. Fill out the form and click "submit"

Here’s a list of changes you can’t update online with instructions on how to complete your request.

  1. Mailing address or banking information for a specific RBC Direct Investing account
  2. Address outside of Canada
  3. Date of birth or a Social Insurance Number (SIN) that starts with a 9
  4. Name change on personal account
  5. Trading authority
  6. General power of attorney and/or court order information
  7. Profile other than your own (i.e.: making a change to a company account).
  8. Beneficiary information
  9. Spousal information on locked-in registered accounts, including LIRA/LIF, and spousal RRSP
  10. Third party on any of your accounts
  11. Adding/Updating/Removing a Trusted Contact Person (TCP)
  12. Switching your language preference (English/French)

Here is what we need from you to complete your request:

  1. Mailing address or banking information for a specific RBC Direct Investing account
    • Your written instructions by secure message (for RBC bank accounts only).
  2. Address outside of Canada (send documents by RBC Secure Email or Mail only):
  3. Date of Birth (DOB) or Social Insurance Number (SIN) starting with 9
    •  For DOB on Registered Accounts:
      • A letter of direction or an online secure message requesting a change for DOB. Verbal instructions are accepted ONLY if you’re correcting the date of birth or SIN for a beneficiary on an RESP account.
    • For DOB on Non- Registered Accounts (send documents by Secure Email or Mail only):
      • For corrections to DOB, we’ll need a letter of direction from you with proof – i.e. a copy of government issued ID with correct DOB shown
    • For SIN starting with 9
      • For a new temporary SIN starting with 9 with a valid expiry, you can send a photocopy showing the SIN and expiry by mail or RBC Secure Email.
  4. Name change on Personal Accounts

Certificate of Change of Name from the Directeur de l'état civil who authorized the name change

Divorce

Certified True Copy of Divorce decree or separation agreement

Birth Name
(in the absence of a divorce decree or a separation agreement)

Certified True Copy of Birth Certificate or government issued ID with birth name

If you are a U.S. resident, a Certified True Copy is acceptable from any reputable U.S. bank

    5.Trading authority

  • Adding a Trading Authority to your account – submit a Trading Authorization
  • Removing Trading Authority from your account – send us instructions to remove using a signed letter of direction or an online secure message
  • Removing yourself as a Trading Authority on an account – send us instructions to remove yourself using a signed letter of direction or an online secure message.

     6. General Power of Attorney (GPA) information

  • Adding a Power of Attorney – submit a completed Power of Attorney document.
    • Please note below:
      1. The front of each page must bear the original 'Certified True Copy' stamp from a Canadian chartered bank.
      2. Continuing Power of Attorney/Mandate in Anticipation of Incapacity - Confirmation Letter must be signed and dated by each Attorney(s) or individual(s) who are appointed and will be acting as Attorney.
      3. Fully completed Trading Authorization - Supplemental Form for Attorney(s):
      4. VIR (Fax/RBC Secure Email or Original) is required if the Attorney is not an RBC client
  • Removing a Power of Attorney
    • When there are no capacity issues with the account holder(s), a letter of direction or an online secure message from the account holder(s) is required.

     7.Updating a profile other than your own (i.e.: making a change to a company account)

  • Call us at 1-800-769-2560 and speak with an Investment Services Representative.

     8. Removing or changing beneficiary information

  • Click on the Profile icon link at the top right of your page. Scroll down to the Account Management section and click on View & Designate Beneficiaries. Follow the instructions to make your changes.

     9. Removing or changing spousal information on locked in plans, including LIRA/LIF and Spousal RRSP

  • Proof of marriage breakdown - stamped certified true copy of original by any chartered bank
  • For common-law marriage where there is no separation agreement, a letter of direction from a common-law partner is acceptable
  • A completed Update & Change Form by RBC Secure Email or Mail Removal of a spouse is not guaranteed for spousal RRSPs as there are specific CRA requirements that need to be met given attribution rules.

     10. Removing or changing a third party on any of your accounts

  • To add a Third Party please complete the Third Party Determination Statement 
  • To remove a Third Party instructions can be accepted verbally or through an online secure message.

     11. Adding/updating/removing a Trusted Contact Person (TCP)

  • You may provide RBC Direct Investing with the name and contact information of a person(s) you trust to assist us in protecting you from financial exploitation or if there are concerns about your mental capacity as it relates to your account(s) with us..
  • Please refer to the Trusted Contact Person (TCP) form for information on TCP and when RBC Direct Investing may contact your TCP with your consent.

     12. Switching your language preference

  To switch the language in which you receive correspondence from us (English/French), simply send us a secure message or call us at 1-800-769-2560. We'll make the change for you. Here's how you can send us a secure message:

  • Go to the Profile icon at top right of your page
  • Click on Message Centre
  • Find the Send Secure Email link, click on it and select RBC Direct Investing from the dropdown menu. Complete your message and click Send. We'll get back to you in about two business days.

You can also change the language in which you view the RBC Direct Investing site at www.rbcdirectinvesting.com. Click the Canadian flag at the top and select your desired language from the dropdown menu. Once redirected to the site page of your choice, sign in.

Regarding required documents in the list of changes above, please submit them to us by RBC Secure Email or Mail. To have a RBC Secure Email set up for you, call 1-800-769-2560 and speak with an Investment Services Representative. You can also send documents to us in the mail.
